What Google’s Smart Jacket Reveals about the Future of Smart Clothing
At the end of September 2017, Google released its Levi’s Commuter Trucker Jacket with Jacquard. The trucker jacket was targeted at urban bike commuters and was originally available for purchase at three physical locations in Santa Monica, California, Brooklyn, New York, and Boston, Massachusetts for US$350. The release was anything but a mass market push, but rather a testing of the waters targeting at an extremely specific demographic. Google first announced its partnership with Levi’s and their Commuter Trucker jacket at the Google I/O developer conference in May 2016. The product idea originated from the collaboration between Levi’s and Google’s Advanced Technology and Projects (ATAP) group.
